fix(iceberg): serve a registered table's metadata on load and commit (#12159)
* iceberg: serve a registered table's metadata on load and commit RegisterTable saved only the metadata location, and loads and commits never read the file there. They served a placeholder with no schema, no snapshots and a new random table UUID on every load, so a registered table read as empty, an INSERT failed against the empty schema, and every other commit failed its assert-table-uuid requirement. Metadata uploaded through the S3 gateway, as a migrated table's is, is stored in chunks that registration did not read, so it registered an empty table. Read the file following its chunks, reject one that is not Iceberg metadata with a 400, and keep its content and table UUID in the record the way CreateTable does. Records registered before this change hold only the location. Loads and commits now read the file there, and the first commit stores it in the record under the file's table UUID. * iceberg: transactions read a location-only registration's metadata file * iceberg: cover transactions on a location-only registration * iceberg: refresh the default name mapping on transaction commits * iceberg: cover name-mapping refresh in transactions * iceberg: roll a transaction back to a registration's metadata file A transaction that failed after flipping a table registered before the record kept its metadata could not undo the flip. The rollback restored the record's prior metadata, which for such a table is only a location, and UpdateTable keeps the full metadata a flip stored when the restore sends none. Loads went on serving the change the client was told had failed, and a client retrying the transaction could apply it twice. Restore the metadata loads served from the file instead, under the file's table UUID. * iceberg: register oversized metadata by its location Registration sends the metadata file's content to the S3 Tables manager, which refuses a request over its 10MB body limit, so a table whose metadata is larger could no longer be registered at all. Register such a file by its location and table UUID alone; loads read it from that location, as they do for a record that never kept its metadata. Export the limit as s3tables.MaxRequestBodySize so the catalog can check against it. A commit to such a table still sends the whole metadata to UpdateTable and stays over the limit. * iceberg: commit oversized metadata by its location * iceberg: let maintenance follow a location-only table record * admin: read a table's metadata file when the record keeps none * iceberg: bound the metadata file a location-only record reads * iceberg: bound only chunked metadata reads in the worker Inline content is what the catalog itself wrote and the REST load path accepts it at any size, so rejecting it in loadMetadata stranded tables over 64 MiB from every maintenance scan. Cap only the chunked read, where the recorded location can name any object in the bucket. --------- Co-authored-by: chrislusf <chrislusf@users.noreply.github.com> |

iceberg: make a table commit a compare-and-swap (#10775)
* iceberg: make a table commit a compare-and-swap
The catalog validated the caller's version token, ran its authorization
checks, and only then wrote the new metadata xattr. Two engines
committing against the same base both passed that check and both wrote,
so the second silently dropped the first one's snapshot. Both also derive
the same v{N}.metadata.json name and the file write overwrote, leaving
the surviving pointer aimed at the loser's metadata - and the loser's
conflict cleanup then deleted the winner's file.
Write the metadata file with an exclusive create and update the xattr
conditionally on the bytes the handler read, the way the maintenance
worker already commits. A writer that lost the race re-reads and retries,
and reports 409 CommitFailedException once out of attempts.
* iceberg: stage a commit under a unique name when the versioned one is taken
Two follow-ups from review of the commit compare-and-swap:
Refusing to overwrite v{N}.metadata.json also refused to get past a file
left behind by a commit that died between staging and updating the
pointer. Every later commit derived the same name, saw the collision, and
reported a conflict, so the table stayed uncommittable until an orphan
sweep removed the file. Stage under v{N}-{uuid} instead: neither writer's
file is overwritten and the catalog pointer still decides who won, which
is how the maintenance worker has always staged its own metadata.
metadataVersionFromLocation learned to read the version back out of that
name.
The conditional update guarded only the metadata attribute while the
write replaced the whole entry, so a policy or tag written in the same
window was silently reverted. Guard every catalog attribute, which turns
that into a conflict the caller retries on fresh state.
* iceberg: give saveMetadataFile the exclusive flag instead of a second name
saveNewMetadataFile, saveMetadataBlobExclusive and uniqueMetadataFileName
were three new names around one existing helper. The flag now rides on
saveMetadataFile and saveMetadataBlob, and the unique-name construction
sits where it is used.
* iceberg: reuse the filer CAS helpers #10773 added, and stage transactions exclusively
#10773 landed mutateEntryExtended, which already writes an entry back under a
whole-entry precondition and retries. Drop the helper this branch added and
route the table commit through it: the check that the metadata is still the
one this request read now lives in the mutation, where it sees current state.
The policy the request was authorized against is asserted too, so an
administrator restricting it mid-commit sends the caller back through
authorization instead of having a stale decision applied. Bucket and
namespace policies live on other entries and a single-entry precondition
cannot cover them.
Multi-table transactions stage their metadata exclusively for the same
reason single-table commits do, and carry the name they landed on into the
pointer flip.

filer: add structured error codes to CreateEntryResponse (#8767)
* filer: add FilerError enum and error_code field to CreateEntryResponse Add a machine-readable error code alongside the existing string error field. This follows the precedent set by PublishMessageResponse in the MQ broker proto. The string field is kept for human readability and backward compatibility. Defined codes: OK, ENTRY_NAME_TOO_LONG, PARENT_IS_FILE, EXISTING_IS_DIRECTORY, EXISTING_IS_FILE, ENTRY_ALREADY_EXISTS. * filer: add sentinel errors and error code mapping in filer_pb Define sentinel errors (ErrEntryNameTooLong, ErrParentIsFile, etc.) in the filer_pb package so both the filer and consumers can reference them without circular imports. Add FilerErrorToSentinel() to map proto error codes to sentinels, and update CreateEntryWithResponse() to check error_code first, falling back to the string-based path for backward compatibility with old servers. * filer: return wrapped sentinel errors and set proto error codes Replace fmt.Errorf string errors in filer.CreateEntry, UpdateEntry, and ensureParentDirectoryEntry with wrapped filer_pb sentinel errors (using %w). This preserves errors.Is() traversal on the server side. In the gRPC CreateEntry handler, map sentinel errors to the corresponding FilerError proto codes using errors.Is(), setting both resp.Error (string, for backward compat) and resp.ErrorCode (enum). * S3: use errors.Is() with filer sentinels instead of string matching Replace fragile string-based error matching in filerErrorToS3Error and other S3 API consumers with errors.Is() checks against filer_pb sentinel errors. This works because the updated CreateEntryWithResponse helper reconstructs sentinel errors from the proto FilerError code. Update iceberg stage_create and metadata_files to check resp.ErrorCode instead of parsing resp.Error strings. Update SSE-S3 to use errors.Is() for the already-exists check. String matching is retained only for non-filer errors (gRPC transport errors, checksum validation) that don't go through CreateEntryResponse. * filer: remove backward-compat string fallbacks for error codes Clients and servers are always deployed together, so there is no need for backward-compatibility fallback paths that parse resp.Error strings when resp.ErrorCode is unset. Simplify all consumers to rely solely on the structured error code. * iceberg: ensure unknown non-OK error codes are not silently ignored When FilerErrorToSentinel returns nil for an unrecognized error code, return an error including the code and message rather than falling through to return nil. * filer: fix redundant error message and restore error wrapping in helper Use request path instead of resp.Error in the sentinel error format string to avoid duplicating the sentinel message (e.g. "entry already exists: entry already exists"). Restore %w wrapping with errors.New() in the fallback paths so callers can use errors.Is()/errors.As(). * filer: promote file to directory on path conflict instead of erroring S3 allows both "foo/bar" (object) and "foo/bar/xyzzy" (another object) to coexist because S3 has a flat key space. When ensureParentDirectoryEntry finds a parent path that is a file instead of a directory, promote it to a directory by setting ModeDir while preserving the original content and chunks. Use Store.UpdateEntry directly to bypass the Filer.UpdateEntry type-change guard. This fixes the S3 compatibility test failures where creating overlapping keys (e.g. "foo/bar" then "foo/bar/xyzzy") returned ExistingObjectIsFile. |
