Chris Lu a0b1272cc3 filer: authorize the chunk proxy and the root listing like the rest of the filer port (#11152)
* filer: require a read token for the root listing

maybeCheckJwtAuthorization waved through every GET/HEAD on "/", so a filer
with jwt.filer_signing.read.key set still served its root directory listing --
entry names, sizes and chunks[].file_id -- to a caller holding no token at
all, and served the same listing to a token restricted by allowed_prefixes.

The exemption was added for health checks before the filer had /healthz and
/readyz. Both are registered on the default and read-only muxes ahead of the
"/" handler and answer without a token, so drop it.

Point the mTLS harness at /healthz, which is what it was probing for.

* filer: keep the jwt query parameter out of a proxied chunk request

The proxy stripped "jwt" from the forwarded query on reads only, on the
grounds that a writer's own credential travels there. It does not: an
uploader carries its AssignVolume token in the Authorization header, and the
query parameter on this path holds a filer credential.

Strip it for every method. A volume server has no business seeing a filer
token, and because security.GetJwt reads the query before the header,
relaying one would hide the writer's own token behind it.

* filer: dispatch the chunk proxy after the JWT gate

The ?proxyChunkId= branch returned before maybeCheckJwtAuthorization ran, so
GET, PUT, POST and DELETE against any needle in the cluster were reachable on
the filer's HTTP port with no filer credential, on a filer where every other
request answered 401. An anonymous caller read a stored object, replaced its
bytes, or deleted the needle, which the master's next vacuum makes permanent.

#10434 stopped the filer from minting a volume write token for that caller,
which closes the write half only where the volume server has a jwt.signing.key
of its own -- not the shipped default, and not what scaffold/security.toml
recommends for a filer deployment. The read half stayed open in every
configuration, because the filer mints the read token itself.

Move the dispatch below the gate. A file id carries no path, so a token
restricted by allowed_prefixes cannot be scoped against one and is refused
here; every consumer of this endpoint holds an unrestricted token.

* filer: mint the volume credential for a proxied write too

The proxy minted a volume token on reads and forwarded whatever the caller
sent on writes. #10434 made it that way because the branch ran ahead of the
JWT gate, so a token minted here would have been signed for an unauthenticated
caller; the branch now runs behind the gate, and the credential the caller
presents there is a filer one, which a volume server cannot validate and has
no business seeing.

Mint at the access level the request needs, and drop the caller's
Authorization when there is no key to mint from. A proxied uploader then needs
only the filer credential, instead of holding one for each hop with a single
header to put them in.

* mount, mq, filer.sync: send the filer credential for a proxied chunk

Every in-tree consumer of ?proxyChunkId= reached the filer anonymously: mount
and the broker put the AssignVolume token in the Authorization header, which
is a volume credential, and filer.sync sent nothing at all. That was enough
only while the branch ran ahead of the filer's JWT gate.

Build the URL through one helper, and pick the credential from the URL it
returns: a chunk proxied through a filer is a request to the filer, which
authorizes it and attaches the volume credential itself, so the token there is
a filer one at the access level the request needs.

* filer: honor -exposeDirectoryData

The flag was declared on all three commands that start a filer and read by
none of them: FilerOption.ExposeDirectoryData was only ever assigned from
filer.expose_directory_metadata in security.toml, so -exposeDirectoryData=false
silently left the listing exposed. Only the TOML key had any effect.

Plumb the flag through and let either switch turn the listing off.

* filer: count a proxied chunk request once

Moving the dispatch below the gate put it after the deferred request
observation, so every proxied chunk now landed in FilerRequestHistogram twice,
once under its HTTP method and once under chunkProxy. Name the deferred one
after the proxy instead, the way the unsupported-method branch already does,
which also gives the endpoint the status codes FilerRequestCounter records.

Chris Lu 3431bdcb74 s3: fix UploadPartCopy with volume-data encryption (#10971)
* operation: give an encrypted chunk the plaintext ETag

With -encryptVolumeData the volume server stores ciphertext, so it cannot
echo a Content-MD5 back and the chunk lands with an empty ETag. Every ETag
derived from those chunks then comes out empty for a single chunk, or
d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e-N for several.

The caller already hashes the plaintext to send as Content-MD5, so keep that
digest as the chunk ETag instead of dropping it, and compute it for a
WantMd5 caller under cipher too.

* s3: re-encrypt a part copy from a volume-encrypted source

UploadPartCopy raw-copies source chunks when neither side uses SSE, which
also caught -encryptVolumeData sources. Those chunks are ciphertext a
whole-chunk cipher key decrypts, so copying a byte range out of one and
keeping the key leaves a destination that fails authentication on GET, and
the copied chunks carry no ETag for the part result to report.

Route them through the re-encrypting path already used for SSE: it reads the
source as plaintext, hashes the part, and writes the destination under the
gateway's own encryption.

* s3: fetch only the range a part copy asked for

The re-encrypting UploadPartCopy path opened the source at offset 0 and threw
the prefix away, so assembling an object part by part read the source once per
part. Now that volume-encrypted sources take this path too, that is the common
case rather than an SSE corner.

The chunk stream already seeks, so hand it the range.

* s3: reject an unsatisfiable copy-source-range

A part copy has no way to report a short part, so a range reaching past the
source cannot be clamped the way a GET clamps one. The fast path silently
produced a part shorter than asked for, or an empty one; the re-encrypting
path pads with zeros, so a 2 MiB source copied as bytes=1048576-9999999 came
back as 1 MiB of data followed by 7.5 MiB of nothing.

Answer InvalidRange instead, which is what s3-tests'
test_multipart_copy_invalid_range expects.

Chris Lu 44115c1051 filer: stop TUS uploads from turning into garbage (#10945)
* filer: store TUS sub-chunks through the regular chunk writer

A TUS sub-chunk was written with one assigned file id, retried up to
three times against that same id, and abandoned on failure: an attempt
that had landed on some replicas left a needle no session record and no
entry ever references, unreclaimable by vacuum.

dataToChunkWithSSE, which the regular write path uses per chunk, assigns
a fresh file id per attempt and hands back the file ids of failed
attempts, which are now freed the way the regular write path frees them.

* filer: retry a chunk write on a fresh volume when the server 5xxs

The filer's chunk writer assigns a fresh file id per attempt but only
retried transient network errors, so a volume filling up and turning
read-only mid-write failed the whole request even though the very next
assignment would have landed elsewhere. Every other write client already
routes this through ShouldReassignUpload; the filer's own write path now
does the same, for regular uploads and TUS sub-chunks alike.

* filer: export the chunk deletion queue

The filer test harness in weed/server builds filer.Filer as a struct
literal, so any code path reaching DeleteChunks dereferenced a nil
queue. Exported like the neighboring DeletionRetryQueue so the harness
can arm it.

* filer: complete a TUS upload whose chunk records overlap

A PATCH retried while its predecessor was still storing a sub-chunk -
a proxy timeout with an immediate retry is enough - records the same
range twice. HEAD computes Upload-Offset as the covered watermark and
reported the upload fully received, but completion demanded exactly
adjacent records and failed every attempt: the client concluded success
from offset == length, no entry was created, and the session eventually
expired, turning the entire upload into deleted needles for the vacuum
to chew through.

Completion now validates gapless coverage with the same watermark HEAD
uses. A record extending coverage joins the entry - the read path
resolves partial overlaps by ModifiedTsNs, and the raced copies carry
identical bytes - while a fully covered duplicate is freed once the
entry lands.

* filer: allow one mutating TUS request per session at a time

Nothing stopped two PATCHes from writing the same range concurrently:
both loaded the same offset, both passed the conflict check, and both
recorded their sub-chunks. A client whose request timed out in a proxy
retries immediately while the server side is still storing the buffered
sub-chunk, which is exactly that race.

A session now accepts one PATCH or DELETE at a time, the way tusd locks
uploads; a concurrent one is refused with 423 Locked, which TUS clients
retry, and HEAD keeps answering so progress polling is unaffected. The
chunk state is loaded under the claim, so a retried PATCH sees every
record its predecessor left and conflicts cleanly instead of duplicating
data.

* test: cover a TUS PATCH raced by its own retry

Stalls a PATCH mid-body over a raw connection, retries the same range
while it is in flight, and expects the retry refused with 423 Locked;
the upload then resumes from the reported offset and the final content
must be intact.

* filer: never free a TUS duplicate the entry still references

Coverage is computed from ranges, so a record fully covered by another
is treated as a duplicate no matter which needle it names. A malformed
record naming a file id the entry keeps would have had that needle freed
right after the entry landed - the corruption this change set exists to
stop. The duplicates are now freed in one batch, skipping any file id
the entry references; their records go with the session directory.

* test: bound the raw TUS connection reads

http.ReadResponse on the stalled PATCH's connection blocked until the
whole go test timeout if the filer never answered.

* filer: free the needles of chunk write attempts a retry replaced

A volume server stores the needle locally and only then fans out to the
replicas, so a replication failure 5xxs with the data already written.
Each attempt assigns its own file id, so once a later attempt lands
elsewhere nothing references the earlier ones: the caller only sees the
chunk that succeeded, and the failed ids were dropped.

They are now freed the way the caller frees them when the whole write
fails. Retrying on a 5xx makes this reachable on every read-only or full
volume, which is exactly the condition that filled the reporter's
volumes.

Chris Lu e521a2a7b9 mount: re-assign to a live volume when a write can't land (#10239)
With replication 001 and one node down, ~2/3 of volumes have their
replica on the dead node. The primary write lands locally but the
replica forward fails, so the volume returns 500 "failed to write to
replicas". #9744 made that upload fail fast so the client re-assigns,
but the client retry never fired: the reassign gate matched a fixed
list of error substrings that didn't include this one. The mount
surfaced I/O error and dropped the chunk, leaving missing lines and
null-byte gaps in an append workload while a node rebooted.

Decide reassignment by HTTP status instead of matching message text.
On the write path a volume server only 5xxs on a ReplicatedWrite
failure (local disk, replica peer down, under-replication) — all of
which a different volume dodges — so any 5xx reassigns; a no-response
transport failure (the assigned target itself is down) reassigns too;
a 4xx is a genuine client error and is surfaced. doUploadData tags its
errors with the response status via uploadStatusError, and the gate
moves from util.MultiRetry(errList) to util.RetryOnError(predicate).

This drops the fragile substring list (and the message-prefix
constants and guard test it needed); store_replicate.go is untouched.

bdcc3154ed refactor: centralize genUploadUrl in UploadOption (#10164)
* refactor: centralize genUploadUrl in UploadOption

Replace inline genFileUrlFn closures with operation.GenUploadUrl field:

- Add GenUploadUrl func(host, fileId) string to UploadOption struct
- Add GenUploadUrlProxy(filerAddress string) utility function
- Remove genFileUrlFn parameter from UploadWithRetry signature
- Update all callers: mount, gateway, mq, filer_copy, filer_sync

This matches the weed mount -filerProxy pattern exactly,
factorizing the URL generation logic across all consumers.

* docker release: run all platform jobs in one wave, cache rocksdb compile

Drop max-parallel so the 13 per-platform builds run together instead of two
waves of 8 (rocksdb was queuing behind the cap and starting ~8 min late).

Keep cache-to mode=max for rocksdb: its RocksDB static_lib compile is
sha-independent, so it caches across releases and stops being the ~16-min
long-pole that gates the merge fan-in. go-build variants stay mode=min.

* refactor: centralize genUploadUrl in UploadOption

Replace inline genFileUrlFn closures with operation.GenUploadUrl field:

- Add GenUploadUrl func(host, fileId) string to UploadOption struct
- Add GenUploadUrlProxy(filerAddress string) utility function
- Remove genFileUrlFn parameter from UploadWithRetry signature
- Update all callers: mount, gateway, mq, filer_copy, filer_sync

This matches the weed mount -filerProxy pattern exactly,
factorizing the URL generation logic across all consumers.

* Remove accidental ROCmFPX submodule reference

* gofmt chunk upload option block

* Preserve broker cipher and re-read proxy filer per upload attempt

Chunk uploads must keep the configured Cipher, and both the mount and broker current filer can change on failover, so build the proxy upload URL inside the closure instead of capturing the address once.

Chris Lu 95427b5573 security: add BearerPrefix constant for Authorization headers (#10101)
Introduce security.BearerPrefix ("Bearer ", RFC 6750) and use it
everywhere an "Authorization: Bearer <token>" header is constructed,
replacing the scattered "BEARER "/"Bearer " string literals. SeaweedFS
matches the scheme case-insensitively when parsing (security.GetJwt), so
behavior is unchanged; this removes the magic string and settles the
casing on the standard form. The parser's upper-case comparison stays as
is on purpose.

Chris Lu ef109fe9e1 mount: don't hang close() when a writer is killed during flush (#10090)
* operation: bound AssignVolume with a deadline

AssignVolume ran on context.Background(), so when the filer is overwhelmed
the RPC could block indefinitely and wedge every caller holding the
connection. Give it a 30s deadline so a stuck assign fails and the caller's
retry/error path runs instead of hanging forever.

* mount: abort flush when the FUSE request is interrupted

On close(), a killed process blocks in fuse_flush waiting for the mount to
answer. doFlush ran its metadata CreateEntry on context.Background() and
ignored the kernel interrupt channel, so against an overwhelmed filer the
flush never completed and the process stayed in uninterruptible sleep --
making the pod un-killable.

Derive a context from the FUSE cancel channel in Flush/Fsync and thread it
through doFlush -> flushMetadataToFiler -> streamCreateEntry; the retry loop
stops as soon as the context is cancelled. Release and the pre-rename flush
keep a non-cancellable context since they must finish regardless.

* operation: harden the AssignVolume timeout test

Make the test double's signal send non-blocking and bound the receive with a
timeout so a regression can't wedge the test instead of failing it.

20e4614fc6 feat(mount): attach Content-MD5 to chunk uploads (#10016)
* mount: attach Content-MD5 to chunk uploads

Mount writes never set UploadOption.Md5, so FileChunk.ETag stays empty
and filer.ETag() degenerates to md5("")-N: same-size files compare
equal regardless of content, defeating metadata-level verification
like filer.sync.verify.

Compute each chunk's MD5 and send it as Content-MD5. The volume server
verifies it on ingest (rejecting in-flight corruption) and echoes it
back, persisting FileChunk.ETag like filer/S3 writes already do.

The dirty-page flush paths already pass a *util.BytesReader whose
backing slice is the whole chunk, so the digest is taken in place with
no extra read, copy, or allocation (UploadWithRetry unwraps it the same
way downstream). Only the rarer plain-reader callers (e.g. manifest
chunks) fall back to io.ReadAll. Skipped under -cipher, where only the
ciphertext reaches the server.

The digest encoding (std-base64 of the raw md5) is the contract the
volume server verifies against, so it is factored into contentMD5Base64
and covered by a unit test.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* mount: compute chunk Content-MD5 in the uploader, not the caller

Move the WantMd5 hashing into UploadWithRetry, where the chunk is already
buffered for the retry path, so saveDataAsChunk stops type-switching the
reader and re-reading plain readers. One materialization point, and the
cipher exclusion lives next to the hash instead of at every call site.

Chris Lu 94357ac6a9 [volume] preserve compression state during replication (#9946)
* preserve compression state during replication

* explain why ParseUpload skips compression for replica writes

* fix data race on err result in FetchAndWriteNeedle

The local-write and replica-write goroutines all wrote the named err return under an unsynchronized err==nil check. Give each goroutine its own error slot and combine after wg.Wait(): local error wins, then the first replica failure.

* skip redundant decompression of compressed needles during replication

doUploadData decompressed a compressed input only to report the clear-data length on UploadResult.Size, which both replication callers discard. Skip the decompress when IsReplication.

Chris Lu 4bf27278fa topology: fail replica writes fast when a replica is unreachable (#9744)
* operation: bound upload retries and honor context cancellation

retriedUploadData hardcoded 3 attempts and an uninterruptible backoff
sleep. A synchronous replica write to a dead host therefore paid the
full dial timeout three times over before failing.

Add UploadOption.MaxAttempts (<=0 keeps the default of 3) so callers can
cap attempts, and make the loop return as soon as the context is
cancelled so an abandoned upload unwinds instead of retrying.

* topology: fail replica writes fast when a replica is unreachable

DistributedOperation already returns on the first error, but a single
dead replica is itself the slow result: its goroutine retries the upload
three times through the dial timeout (~30s) before any error surfaces,
stalling the originating client write the whole time.

Make the replica write a single attempt (MaxAttempts=1) so a dead
replica fails after one dial timeout instead of three, and thread a
context into DistributedOperation that is cancelled once the outcome is
decided, so a healthy replica is no longer held hostage by one stalled
in a dial. The originating client write is what retries.

* topology: keep replica deletes off the client request context

ReplicatedDelete runs after the local needle is already deleted. Driving
the replica deletes off r.Context() means a client disconnect cancels
them and orphans needles on the replicas, so use a background context.

* operation, topology: trim comments on the replica fail-fast path

Chris Lu 0716577ec8 fix(upload): rewind request body when retrying on connection reset (#9139) (#9222)
* fix(upload): rewind request body when retrying on connection reset (#9139)

When httpClient.Do() returned "connection reset by peer" or "use of
closed network connection", upload_content retried with the same
*http.Request. But the body is a *bytes.Reader the first attempt
already consumed, so the retry sent 0 bytes and Go's transport
surfaced "http: ContentLength=N with Body length 0".

http.NewRequestWithContext populates req.GetBody for *bytes.Reader
bodies; use it to attach a fresh body before retrying.

Reproduces the issue with a unit test (asserts both attempts see
the same payload bytes); the test fails without the fix.

* upload: skip inner retry when body cannot be rewound

Per review feedback: if req.GetBody is nil or returns an error, the
inner retry would call Do(req) with an already-consumed body and the
"connection reset" error would be replaced by the misleading
"ContentLength=N with Body length 0" — the very symptom this PR set
out to fix. Skip the inner retry on rewind failure and let the outer
retriedUploadData loop reissue with a fresh request, and log when
GetBody is unavailable for observability.

* upload: log the actual transport error in the inner retry log line

Per review feedback: the diagnostic glog at the top of the inner
retry branch was logging postErr — the request-construction error
from http.NewRequestWithContext, which is necessarily nil there
because the function returns early at line 423 if it isn't.
Operators were seeing "<nil>" instead of the transient transport
error that triggered the rewind. Reference post_err so the
connection-reset / closed-connection cause is actually visible.

steve.wei 1a7ab2ea82 fix(upload): keep Content-MD5 on 204 unchanged writes (#9198)

Chris Lu 00a2e22478 fix(mount): remove fid pool to stop master over-allocating volumes (#9111)
* fix(mount): remove fid pool to stop master over-allocating volumes

The writeback-cache fid pool pre-allocated file IDs with
ExpectedDataSize = ChunkSizeLimit (typically 8+ MB). The master's
PickForWrite charges count * expectedDataSize against the volume's
effectiveSize, so a full pool refill could charge hundreds of MB
against a single volume before any bytes were actually written.
That tripped RecordAssign's hard-limit path and eagerly removed
volumes from writable, causing the master to grow new volumes
even when the real data being written was tiny.

Drop the pool entirely. Every chunk upload goes through
UploadWithRetry -> AssignVolume with no ExpectedDataSize hint,
letting the master fall back to the 1 MB default estimate. The
mount->filer grpc connection is already cached in pb.WithGrpcClient
(non-streaming mode), so per-chunk AssignVolume is a unary RPC
over an existing HTTP/2 stream, not a full dial. Path-based
filer.conf storage rules now apply to mount chunk assigns again,
which the pool had to skip.

Also remove the now-unused operation.UploadWithAssignFunc and its
AssignFunc type.

* fix(upload): populate ExpectedDataSize from actual chunk bytes

UploadWithRetry already buffers the full chunk into `data` before
calling AssignVolume, so the real size is known. Previously the
assign request went out with ExpectedDataSize=0, making the master
fall back to the 1 MB DefaultNeedleSizeEstimate per fid — same
over-reservation symptom the pool had, just smaller per call.

Stamp ExpectedDataSize = len(data) before the assign RPC when the
caller hasn't already set it. This covers mount chunk uploads,
filer_copy, filersink, mq/logstore, broker_write, gateway_upload,
and nfs — all the UploadWithRetry paths.

* fix(assign): pass real ExpectedDataSize at every assign call site

After removing the mount fid pool, per-chunk AssignVolume calls went
out with ExpectedDataSize=0, making the master fall back to its 1 MB
DefaultNeedleSizeEstimate. That's still an over-estimate for small
writes. Thread the real payload size through every remaining assign
site so RecordAssign charges effectiveSize accurately and stops
prematurely marking volumes full.

- filer: assignNewFileInfo now takes expectedDataSize and stamps it
on both primary and alternate VolumeAssignRequests. Callers pass:
  - SSE data-to-chunk: len(data)
  - copy manifest save: len(data)
  - streamCopyChunk: srcChunk.Size
  - TUS sub-chunk: bytes read
  - saveAsChunk (autochunk/manifestize): 0 (small, size unknown
until the reader is drained; master uses 1 MB default)
- filer gRPC remote fetch-and-write: ExpectedDataSize = chunkSize
after the adaptive chunkSize is computed.
- ChunkedUploadOption.AssignFunc gains an expectedDataSize parameter;
upload_chunked.go passes the buffered dataSize at the call site.
S3 PUT assignFunc stamps it on the AssignVolumeRequest.
- S3 copy: assignNewVolume / prepareChunkCopy take expectedDataSize;
all seven call sites pass the source chunk's Size.
- operation.SubmitFiles / FilePart.Upload: derive per-fid size from
FileSize (average for batched requests, real per-chunk size for
  sequential chunk assigns).
- benchmark: pass fileSize.
- filer append-to-file: pass len(data).

* fix(assign): thread size through SaveDataAsChunkFunctionType

The saveAsChunk path (autochunk, filer_copy, webdav, mount) ran
AssignVolume before the reader was drained, so it had to pass
ExpectedDataSize=0 and fall back to the master's 1 MB default.

Add an expectedDataSize parameter to SaveDataAsChunkFunctionType.
- mergeIntoManifest already has the serialized manifest bytes, so
  it passes uint64(len(data)) directly.
- Mount's saveDataAsChunk ignores the parameter because it uses
UploadWithRetry, which already stamps len(data) on the assign
  after reading the payload.
- webdav and filer_copy saveDataAsChunk follow the same UploadWithRetry
path and also ignore the hint.
- Filer's saveAsChunk (used for manifestize) plumbs the value to
assignNewFileInfo so manifest-chunk assigns get a real size.

Callers of saveFunc-as-value (weedfs_file_sync, dirty_pages_chunked)
pass the chunk size they're about to upload.

Chris Lu e8a8449553 feat(mount): pre-allocate file IDs in pool for writeback cache mode (#9038)
* feat(mount): pre-allocate file IDs in pool for writeback cache mode

When writeback caching is enabled, chunk uploads no longer block on a
per-chunk AssignVolume RPC. Instead, a FileIdPool pre-allocates file IDs
in batches using a single AssignVolume(Count=N, ExpectedDataSize=ChunkSize)
call and hands them out instantly to upload workers.

Pool size is 2x ConcurrentWriters, refilled in background when it drops
below ConcurrentWriters. Entries expire after 25s to respect JWT TTL.
Sequential needle keys are generated from the base file ID returned by
the master, so one Assign RPC produces N usable IDs.

This cuts per-chunk upload latency from 2 RTTs (assign + upload) to
1 RTT (upload only), with the assign cost amortized across the batch.

* test: add benchmarks for file ID pool vs direct assign

Benchmarks measure:
- Pool Get vs Direct AssignVolume at various simulated latencies
- Batch assign scaling (Count=1 through Count=32)
- Concurrent pool access with 1-64 workers

Results on Apple M4:
- Pool Get: constant ~3ns regardless of assign latency
- Batch=16: 15.7x more IDs/sec than individual assigns
- 64 concurrent workers: 19M IDs/sec throughput

* fix(mount): address review feedback on file ID pool

1. Fix race condition in Get(): use sync.Cond so callers wait for an
in-flight refill instead of returning an error when the pool is empty.

2. Match default pool size to async flush worker count (128, not 16)
   when ConcurrentWriters is unset.

3. Add logging to UploadWithAssignFunc for consistency with UploadWithRetry.

4. Document that pooled assigns omit the Path field, bypassing path-based
storage rules (filer.conf). This is an intentional tradeoff for
   writeback cache performance.

5. Fix flaky expiry test: widen time margin from 50ms to 1s.

6. Add TestFileIdPoolGetWaitsForRefill to verify concurrent waiters.

* fix(mount): use individual Count=1 assigns to get per-fid JWTs

The master generates one JWT per AssignResponse, bound to the base file
ID (master_grpc_server_assign.go:158). The volume server validates that
the JWT's Fid matches the upload exactly (volume_server_handlers.go:367).
Using Count=N and deriving sequential IDs would fail this check.

Switch to individual Count=1 RPCs over a single gRPC connection. This
still amortizes connection overhead while getting a correct per-fid JWT
for each entry. Partial batches are accepted if some requests fail.

Remove unused needle import now that sequential ID generation is gone.

* fix(mount): separate pprof from FUSE protocol debug logging

The -debug flag was enabling both the pprof HTTP server and the noisy
go-fuse protocol logging (rx/tx lines for every FUSE operation). This
makes profiling impractical as the log output dominates.

Split into two flags:
- -debug: enables pprof HTTP server only (for profiling)
- -debug.fuse: enables raw FUSE protocol request/response logging

* perf(mount): replace LevelDB read+write with in-memory overlay for dir mtime

Profile showed TouchDirMtimeCtime at 0.22s — every create/rename/unlink
in a directory did a LevelDB FindEntry (read) + UpdateEntry (write) just
to bump the parent dir's mtime/ctime.

Replace with an in-memory map (same pattern as existing atime overlay):
- touchDirMtimeCtimeLocal now stores inode→timestamp in dirMtimeMap
- applyInMemoryDirMtime overlays onto GetAttr/Lookup output
- No LevelDB I/O on the mutation hot path

The overlay only advances timestamps forward (max of stored vs overlay),
so stale entries are harmless. Map is bounded at 8192 entries.

* perf(mount): skip self-originated metadata subscription events in writeback mode

With writeback caching, this mount is the single writer. All local
mutations are already applied to the local meta cache (via
applyLocalMetadataEvent or direct InsertEntry). The filer subscription
then delivers the same event back, causing redundant work:
proto.Clone, enqueue to apply loop, dedup ring check, and sometimes
redundant LevelDB writes when the dedup ring misses (deferred creates).

Check EventNotification.Signatures against selfSignature and skip
events that originated from this mount. This eliminates the redundant
processing for every self-originated mutation.

* perf(mount): increase kernel FUSE cache TTL in writeback cache mode

With writeback caching, this mount is the single writer — the local
meta cache is authoritative. Increase EntryValid and AttrValid from 1s
to 10s so the kernel doesn't re-issue Lookup/GetAttr for every path
component and stat call.

This reduces FUSE /dev/fuse round-trips which dominate the profile at
38% of CPU (syscall.rawsyscalln). Each saved round-trip eliminates a
kernel→userspace→kernel transition.

Normal (non-writeback) mode retains the 1s TTL for multi-mount
consistency.

Chris Lu 2919bb27e5 fix(sync): use per-cluster TLS for HTTP volume connections in filer.sync (#8974)
* fix(sync): use per-cluster TLS for HTTP volume connections in filer.sync (#8965)

When filer.sync runs with -a.security and -b.security flags, only gRPC
connections received per-cluster TLS configuration. HTTP clients for
volume server reads and uploads used a global singleton with the default
security.toml, causing TLS verification failures when clusters use
different self-signed certificates.

Load per-cluster HTTPS client config from the security files and pass
dedicated HTTP clients to FilerSource (for downloads) and FilerSink
(for uploads) so each direction uses the correct cluster's certificates.

* fix(sync): address review feedback for per-cluster HTTP TLS

- Add insecure_skip_verify support to NewHttpClientWithTLS and read it
from per-cluster security config via https.client.insecure_skip_verify
- Error on partial mTLS config (cert without key or vice versa)
- Add nil-check for client parameter in DownloadFileWithClient
- Document SetUploader as init-only (same pattern as SetChunkConcurrency)

Chris LuandCopilot 0647f66bb5 filer.sync: add exponential backoff on unexpected EOF during replication (#8557)
* filer.sync: add exponential backoff on unexpected EOF during replication

When the source volume server drops connections under high traffic,
filer.sync retries aggressively (every 1-6s), hammering the already
overloaded source. This adds a longer exponential backoff (10s to 2min)
specifically for "unexpected EOF" errors, reducing pressure on the
source while still retrying indefinitely until success.

Also adds more logging throughout the replication path:
- Log source URL and error at V(0) when ReadPart or io.ReadAll fails
- Log content-length and byte counts at V(4) on success
- Log backoff duration in retry messages

Fixes #8542

* filer.sync: extract backoff helper and fix 2-minute cap

- Extract nextEofBackoff() and isEofError() helpers to deduplicate
the backoff logic between fetchAndWrite and uploadManifestChunk
- Fix the cap: previously 80s would double to 160s and pass the
< 2min check uncapped. Now doubles first, then clamps to 2min.

* filer.sync: log source URL instead of empty upload URL on read errors

UploadUrl is not populated until after the reader is consumed, so the
V(0) and V(4) logs were printing an empty string. Add SourceUrl field
to UploadOption and populate it from the HTTP response in fetchAndWrite.

* filer.sync: guard isEofError against nil error

* filer.sync: use errors. Is for EOF detection, fix log wording

- Replace broad substring matching ("read input", "unexpected EOF")
  with errors.Is(err, io.ErrUnexpectedEOF) and errors.Is(err, io.EOF)
so only actual EOF errors trigger the longer backoff
- Fix awkward log phrasing: "interrupted replicate" → "interrupted
  while replicating"

* filer.sync: remove EOF backoff from uploadManifestChunk

uploadManifestChunk reads from an in-memory bytes.Reader, so any EOF
errors there are from the destination side, not a broken source stream.
The long source-oriented backoff is inappropriate; let RetryUntil
handle destination retries at its normal cadence.

Chris Lu c52d3d1229 fix: correct chunk size in encrypted uploads (fixes #8151) (#8154)
* fix: correct chunk size in encrypted uploads

When uploading with encryption enabled (-encryptVolumeData flag),
the chunk metadata was incorrectly storing the encrypted data size
instead of the original uncompressed size.

This caused data corruption when reading files back because:
1. Encrypted data is larger than original data
2. After decryption and decompression, the actual data is smaller
3. Size validation in readEncryptedUrl would fail
4. Files appeared truncated with null bytes

The fix ensures uploadResult.Size uses clearDataLen (the original
uncompressed size) in both cipher and non-cipher code paths,
matching the expected behavior.

Fixes: #8151

* test: add comprehensive tests for encrypted upload size fix

Add unit tests to verify that encrypted uploads correctly store the
original uncompressed data size, not the encrypted size.

Tests cover:
- Cipher key generation and encryption/decryption roundtrip
- Compression + encryption roundtrip with size preservation
- Different data sizes
- Compression detection and effectiveness
- Size behavior demonstration showing the bug and fix

All tests verify that metadata stores the original size (19 bytes in
the key example) not the encrypted size (75 bytes), which is critical
for preventing data corruption on read operations.

Chris Lu 8d6bcddf60 Add S3 volume encryption support with -s3.encryptVolumeData flag (#7890)
* Add S3 volume encryption support with -s3.encryptVolumeData flag

This change adds volume-level encryption support for S3 uploads, similar
to the existing -filer.encryptVolumeData option. Each chunk is encrypted
with its own auto-generated CipherKey when the flag is enabled.

Changes:
- Add -s3.encryptVolumeData flag to weed s3, weed server, and weed mini
- Wire Cipher option through S3ApiServer and ChunkedUploadOption
- Add integration tests for multi-chunk range reads with encryption
- Tests verify encryption works across chunk boundaries

Usage:
  weed s3 -encryptVolumeData
  weed server -s3 -s3.encryptVolumeData
  weed mini -s3.encryptVolumeData

Integration tests:
  go test -v -tags=integration -timeout 5m ./test/s3/sse/...

* Add GitHub Actions CI for S3 volume encryption tests

- Add test-volume-encryption target to Makefile that starts server with -s3.encryptVolumeData
- Add s3-volume-encryption job to GitHub Actions workflow
- Tests run with integration build tag and 10m timeout
- Server logs uploaded on failure for debugging

* Fix S3 client credentials to use environment variables

The test was using hardcoded credentials "any"/"any" but the Makefile
sets AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID/AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY to "some_access_key1"/
"some_secret_key1". Updated getS3Client() to read from environment
variables with fallback to "any"/"any" for manual testing.

* Change bucket creation errors from skip to fatal

Tests should fail, not skip, when bucket creation fails. This ensures
that credential mismatches and other configuration issues are caught
rather than silently skipped.

* Make copy and multipart test jobs fail instead of succeed

Changed exit 0 to exit 1 for s3-sse-copy-operations and s3-sse-multipart
jobs. These jobs document known limitations but should fail to ensure
the issues are tracked and addressed, not silently ignored.

* Hardcode S3 credentials to match Makefile

Changed from environment variables to hardcoded credentials
"some_access_key1"/"some_secret_key1" to match the Makefile
configuration. This ensures tests work reliably.

Benefits:
- Consistent API usage pattern across all bucket metadata operations
- Simpler, more readable code that leverages the structured API
- Eliminates calls to intermediate legacy functions
- Better error handling and logging consistency
- All tests pass with improved functionality

This completes the transition to using the new structured BucketMetadata API
throughout the entire bucket configuration and encryption subsystem.

* Fix GitHub PR #7144 code review comments

Address all code review comments from Gemini Code Assist bot:

1. **High Priority - SSE-KMS Key Validation**: Fixed ValidateSSEKMSKey to allow empty KMS key ID
   - Empty key ID now indicates use of default KMS key (consistent with AWS behavior)
   - Updated ParseSSEKMSHeaders to call validation after parsing
   - Enhanced isValidKMSKeyID to reject keys with spaces and invalid characters

2. **Medium Priority - KMS Registry Error Handling**: Improved error collection in CloseAll
   - Now collects all provider close errors instead of only returning the last one
   - Uses proper error formatting with %w verb for error wrapping
   - Returns single error for one failure, combined message for multiple failures

3. **Medium Priority - Local KMS Aliases Consistency**: Fixed alias handling in CreateKey
   - Now updates the aliases slice in-place to maintain consistency
   - Ensures both p.keys map and key.Aliases slice use the same prefixed format

All changes maintain backward compatibility and improve error handling robustness.
Tests updated and passing for all scenarios including edge cases.

* Use errors.Join for KMS registry error handling

Replace manual string building with the more idiomatic errors.Join function:

- Removed manual error message concatenation with strings.Builder
- Simplified error handling logic by using errors.Join(allErrors...)
- Removed unnecessary string import
- Added errors import for errors.Join

This approach is cleaner, more idiomatic, and automatically handles:
- Returning nil for empty error slice
- Returning single error for one-element slice
- Properly formatting multiple errors with newlines

The errors.Join function was introduced in Go 1.20 and is the
recommended way to combine multiple errors.

* Update registry.go

* Fix GitHub PR #7144 latest review comments

Address all new code review comments from Gemini Code Assist bot:

1. **High Priority - SSE-KMS Detection Logic**: Tightened IsSSEKMSEncrypted function
   - Now relies only on the canonical x-amz-server-side-encryption header
   - Removed redundant check for x-amz-encrypted-data-key metadata
   - Prevents misinterpretation of objects with inconsistent metadata state
   - Updated test case to reflect correct behavior (encrypted data key only = false)

2. **Medium Priority - UUID Validation**: Enhanced KMS key ID validation
   - Replaced simplistic length/hyphen count check with proper regex validation
   - Added regexp import for robust UUID format checking
   - Regex pattern: ^[a-fA-F0-9]{8}-[a-fA-F0-9]{4}-[a-fA-F0-9]{4}-[a-fA-F0-9]{4}-[a-fA-F0-9]{12}$
   - Prevents invalid formats like '------------------------------------' from passing

3. **Medium Priority - Alias Mutation Fix**: Avoided input slice modification
   - Changed CreateKey to not mutate the input aliases slice in-place
   - Uses local variable for modified alias to prevent side effects
   - Maintains backward compatibility while being safer for callers

All changes improve code robustness and follow AWS S3 standards more closely.
Tests updated and passing for all scenarios including edge cases.

* Fix failing SSE tests

Address two failing test cases:

1. **TestSSEHeaderConflicts**: Fixed SSE-C and SSE-KMS mutual exclusion
   - Modified IsSSECRequest to return false if SSE-KMS headers are present
   - Modified IsSSEKMSRequest to return false if SSE-C headers are present
   - This prevents both detection functions from returning true simultaneously
   - Aligns with AWS S3 behavior where SSE-C and SSE-KMS are mutually exclusive

2. **TestBucketEncryptionEdgeCases**: Fixed XML namespace validation
   - Added namespace validation in encryptionConfigFromXMLBytes function
   - Now rejects XML with invalid namespaces (only allows empty or AWS standard namespace)
   - Validates XMLName.Space to ensure proper XML structure
   - Prevents acceptance of malformed XML with incorrect namespaces

Both fixes improve compliance with AWS S3 standards and prevent invalid
configurations from being accepted. All SSE and bucket encryption tests
now pass successfully.

* Fix GitHub PR #7144 latest review comments

Address two new code review comments from Gemini Code Assist bot:

1. **High Priority - Race Condition in UpdateBucketMetadata**: Fixed thread safety issue
   - Added per-bucket locking mechanism to prevent race conditions
   - Introduced bucketMetadataLocks map with RWMutex for each bucket
   - Added getBucketMetadataLock helper with double-checked locking pattern
   - UpdateBucketMetadata now uses bucket-specific locks to serialize metadata updates
   - Prevents last-writer-wins scenarios when concurrent requests update different metadata parts

2. **Medium Priority - KMS Key ARN Validation**: Improved robustness of ARN validation
   - Enhanced isValidKMSKeyID function to strictly validate ARN structure
   - Changed from 'len(parts) >= 6' to 'len(parts) != 6' for exact part count
   - Added proper resource validation for key/ and alias/ prefixes
   - Prevents malformed ARNs with incorrect structure from being accepted
   - Now validates: arn:aws:kms:region:account:key/keyid or arn:aws:kms:region:account:alias/aliasname

Both fixes improve system reliability and prevent edge cases that could cause
data corruption or security issues. All existing tests continue to pass.

- Handle all cross-encryption scenarios (e.g., SSE-KMS→SSE-C, SSE-S3→unencrypted)
- Improve code maintainability and readability
- Add comprehensive documentation for the helper function

The refactoring reduces code duplication from ~50 lines to ~10 lines while
maintaining identical functionality. All SSE copy tests continue to pass.

* reduce logs

* Address PR comments: consolidate KMS validation & reduce debug logging

1. Create shared s3_validation_utils.go for consistent KMS key validation
   - Move isValidKMSKeyID from s3_sse_kms.go to shared utility
   - Ensures consistent validation across bucket encryption, object operations, and copy validation
   - Eliminates coupling between s3_bucket_encryption.go and s3_sse_kms.go
   - Provides comprehensive validation: rejects spaces, control characters, validates length

2. Reduce verbose debug logging in calculateIVWithOffset function
   - Change glog.Infof to glog.V(4).Infof for debug statements
   - Prevents log flooding in production environments
   - Consistent with other debug logs in the codebase

Both changes improve code quality, maintainability, and production readiness.

* Fix critical issues identified in PR review #7151

1. Remove unreachable return statement in s3_sse_s3.go
   - Fixed dead code on line 43 that was unreachable after return on line 42
   - Ensures proper function termination and eliminates confusion

2. Fix malformed error handling in s3api_object_handlers_put.go
   - Corrected incorrectly indented and duplicated error handling block
   - Fixed compilation error caused by syntax issues in merge conflict resolution
   - Proper error handling for encryption context parsing now restored

3. Remove misleading test case in s3_sse_integration_test.go
   - Eliminated "Explicit Encryption Overrides Default" test that was misleading
   - Test claimed to verify override behavior but only tested normal bucket defaults
   - Reduces confusion and eliminates redundant test coverage

All changes verified with successful compilation and basic S3 API tests passing.

* Fix critical SSE-S3 security vulnerabilities and functionality gaps from PR review #7151

🔒 SECURITY FIXES:
1. Fix severe IV reuse vulnerability in SSE-S3 CTR mode encryption
   - Added calculateSSES3IVWithOffset function to ensure unique IVs per chunk/part
   - Updated CreateSSES3EncryptedReaderWithBaseIV to accept offset parameter
   - Prevents CTR mode IV reuse which could compromise confidentiality
   - Same secure approach as used in SSE-KMS implementation

🚀 FUNCTIONALITY FIXES:
2. Add missing SSE-S3 multipart upload support in PutObjectPartHandler
   - SSE-S3 multipart uploads now properly inherit encryption settings from CreateMultipartUpload
   - Added logic to check for SeaweedFSSSES3Encryption metadata in upload entry
   - Sets appropriate headers for putToFiler to handle SSE-S3 encryption
   - Mirrors existing SSE-KMS multipart implementation pattern

3. Fix incorrect SSE type tracking for SSE-S3 chunks
   - Changed from filer_pb.SSEType_NONE to filer_pb.SSEType_SSE_S3
   - Ensures proper chunk metadata tracking and consistency
   - Eliminates confusion about encryption status of SSE-S3 chunks

🔧 LOGGING IMPROVEMENTS:
4. Reduce verbose debug logging in SSE-S3 detection
   - Changed glog.Infof to glog.V(4).Infof for debug messages
   - Prevents log flooding in production environments
   - Consistent with other debug logging patterns

 VERIFICATION:
- All changes compile successfully
- Basic S3 API tests pass
- Security vulnerability eliminated with proper IV offset calculation
- Multipart SSE-S3 uploads now properly supported
- Chunk metadata correctly tagged with SSE-S3 type

* Address code maintainability issues from PR review #7151

🔄 CODE DEDUPLICATION:
1. Eliminate duplicate IV calculation functions
   - Created shared s3_sse_utils.go with unified calculateIVWithOffset function
   - Removed duplicate calculateSSES3IVWithOffset from s3_sse_s3.go
   - Removed duplicate calculateIVWithOffset from s3_sse_kms.go
   - Both SSE-KMS and SSE-S3 now use the same proven IV offset calculation
   - Ensures consistent cryptographic behavior across all SSE implementations

📋 SHARED HEADER LOGIC IMPROVEMENT:
2. Refactor shouldSkipEncryptionHeader for better clarity
   - Explicitly identify shared headers (AmzServerSideEncryption) used by multiple SSE types
   - Separate SSE-specific headers from shared headers for clearer reasoning
   - Added isSharedSSEHeader, isSSECOnlyHeader, isSSEKMSOnlyHeader, isSSES3OnlyHeader
   - Improved logic flow: shared headers are contextually assigned to appropriate SSE types
   - Enhanced code maintainability and reduced confusion about header ownership

🎯 BENEFITS:
- DRY principle: Single source of truth for IV offset calculation (40 lines → shared utility)
- Maintainability: Changes to IV calculation logic now only need updates in one place
- Clarity: Header filtering logic is now explicit about shared vs. specific headers
- Consistency: Same cryptographic operations across SSE-KMS and SSE-S3
- Future-proofing: Easier to add new SSE types or shared headers

 VERIFICATION:
- All code compiles successfully
- Basic S3 API tests pass
- No functional changes - purely structural improvements
- Same security guarantees maintained with better organization

* 🚨 CRITICAL FIX: Complete SSE-S3 multipart upload implementation - prevents data corruption

⚠️ CRITICAL BUG FIXED:
The SSE-S3 multipart upload implementation was incomplete and would have caused
data corruption for all multipart SSE-S3 uploads. Each part would be encrypted
with a different key, making the final assembled object unreadable.

🔍 ROOT CAUSE:
PutObjectPartHandler only set AmzServerSideEncryption header but did NOT retrieve
and pass the shared base IV and key data that were stored during CreateMultipartUpload.
This caused putToFiler to generate NEW encryption keys for each part instead of
using the consistent shared key.

 COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION:

1. **Added missing header constants** (s3_constants/header.go):
   - SeaweedFSSSES3BaseIVHeader: for passing base IV to putToFiler
   - SeaweedFSSSES3KeyDataHeader: for passing key data to putToFiler

2. **Fixed PutObjectPartHandler** (s3api_object_handlers_multipart.go):
   - Retrieve base IV from uploadEntry.Extended[SeaweedFSSSES3BaseIV]
   - Retrieve key data from uploadEntry.Extended[SeaweedFSSSES3KeyData]
   - Pass both to putToFiler via request headers
   - Added comprehensive error handling and logging for missing data
   - Mirrors the proven SSE-KMS multipart implementation pattern

3. **Enhanced putToFiler SSE-S3 logic** (s3api_object_handlers_put.go):
   - Detect multipart parts via presence of SSE-S3 headers
   - For multipart: deserialize provided key + use base IV with offset calculation
   - For single-part: maintain existing logic (generate new key + IV)
   - Use CreateSSES3EncryptedReaderWithBaseIV for consistent multipart encryption

🔐 SECURITY & CONSISTENCY:
- Same encryption key used across ALL parts of a multipart upload
- Unique IV per part using calculateIVWithOffset (prevents CTR mode vulnerabilities)
- Proper base IV offset calculation ensures cryptographic security
- Complete metadata serialization for storage and retrieval

📊 DATA FLOW FIX:
Before: CreateMultipartUpload stores key/IV → PutObjectPart ignores → new key per part → CORRUPTED FINAL OBJECT
After: CreateMultipartUpload stores key/IV → PutObjectPart retrieves → same key all parts → VALID FINAL OBJECT

 VERIFICATION:
- All code compiles successfully
- Basic S3 API tests pass
- Follows same proven patterns as working SSE-KMS multipart implementation
- Comprehensive error handling prevents silent failures

This fix is essential for SSE-S3 multipart uploads to function correctly in production.

* 🚨 CRITICAL FIX: Activate bucket default encryption - was completely non-functional

⚠️ CRITICAL BUG FIXED:
Bucket default encryption functions were implemented but NEVER CALLED anywhere
in the request handling pipeline, making the entire feature completely non-functional.
Users setting bucket default encryption would expect automatic encryption, but
objects would be stored unencrypted.

🔍 ROOT CAUSE:
The functions applyBucketDefaultEncryption(), applySSES3DefaultEncryption(), and
applySSEKMSDefaultEncryption() were defined in putToFiler but never invoked.
No integration point existed to check for bucket defaults when no explicit
encryption headers were provided.

 COMPLETE INTEGRATION:

1. **Added bucket default encryption logic in putToFiler** (lines 361-385):
   - Check if no explicit encryption was applied (SSE-C, SSE-KMS, or SSE-S3)
   - Call applyBucketDefaultEncryption() to check bucket configuration
   - Apply appropriate default encryption (SSE-S3 or SSE-KMS) if configured
   - Handle all metadata serialization for applied default encryption

2. **Automatic coverage for ALL upload types**:
    Regular PutObject uploads (PutObjectHandler)
    Versioned object uploads (putVersionedObject)
    Suspended versioning uploads (putSuspendedVersioningObject)
    POST policy uploads (PostPolicyHandler)
Multipart parts (intentionally skip - inherit from CreateMultipartUpload)

3. **Proper response headers**:
   - Existing SSE type detection automatically includes bucket default encryption
   - PutObjectHandler already sets response headers based on returned sseType
   - No additional changes needed for proper S3 API compliance

🔄 AWS S3 BEHAVIOR IMPLEMENTED:
- Bucket default encryption automatically applies when no explicit encryption specified
- Explicit encryption headers always override bucket defaults (correct precedence)
- Response headers correctly indicate applied encryption method
- Supports both SSE-S3 and SSE-KMS bucket default encryption

📊 IMPACT:
Before: Bucket default encryption = COMPLETELY IGNORED (major S3 compatibility gap)
After: Bucket default encryption = FULLY FUNCTIONAL (complete S3 compatibility)

 VERIFICATION:
- All code compiles successfully
- Basic S3 API tests pass
- Universal application through putToFiler ensures consistent behavior
- Proper error handling prevents silent failures

This fix makes bucket default encryption feature fully operational for the first time.

* 🚨 CRITICAL SECURITY FIX: Fix insufficient error handling in SSE multipart uploads

CRITICAL VULNERABILITY FIXED:
Silent failures in SSE-S3 and SSE-KMS multipart upload initialization could
lead to severe security vulnerabilities, specifically zero-value IV usage
which completely compromises encryption security.

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS:

1. Zero-value IV vulnerability (CRITICAL):
   - If rand.Read(baseIV) fails, IV remains all zeros
   - Zero IV in CTR mode = catastrophic crypto failure
   - All encrypted data becomes trivially decryptable

2. Silent key generation failure (HIGH):
   - If keyManager.GetOrCreateKey() fails, no encryption key stored
   - Parts upload without encryption while appearing to be encrypted
   - Data stored unencrypted despite SSE headers

3. Invalid serialization handling (MEDIUM):
   - If SerializeSSES3Metadata() fails, corrupted key data stored
   - Causes decryption failures during object retrieval
   - Silent data corruption with delayed failure

COMPREHENSIVE FIXES APPLIED:

1. Proper error propagation pattern:
   - Added criticalError variable to capture failures within anonymous function
   - Check criticalError after mkdir() call and return s3err.ErrInternalError
   - Prevents silent failures that could compromise security

2. Fixed ALL critical crypto operations:
    SSE-S3 rand.Read(baseIV) - prevents zero-value IV
    SSE-S3 keyManager.GetOrCreateKey() - prevents missing encryption keys
SSE-S3 SerializeSSES3Metadata() - prevents invalid key data storage
    SSE-KMS rand.Read(baseIV) - prevents zero-value IV (consistency fix)

3. Fail-fast security model:
   - Any critical crypto operation failure → immediate request termination
   - No partial initialization that could lead to security vulnerabilities
   - Clear error messages for debugging without exposing sensitive details

SECURITY IMPACT:
Before: Critical crypto vulnerabilities possible
After: Cryptographically secure initialization guaranteed

This fix prevents potential data exposure and ensures cryptographic security
for all SSE multipart uploads.

* 🚨 CRITICAL FIX: Address PR review issues from #7151

⚠️ ADDRESSES CRITICAL AND MEDIUM PRIORITY ISSUES:

1. **CRITICAL: Fix IV storage for bucket default SSE-S3 encryption**
   - Problem: IV was stored in separate variable, not on SSES3Key object
   - Impact: Made decryption impossible for bucket default encrypted objects
   - Fix: Store IV directly on key.IV for proper decryption access

2. **MEDIUM: Remove redundant sseS3IV parameter**
   - Simplified applyBucketDefaultEncryption and applySSES3DefaultEncryption signatures
   - Removed unnecessary IV parameter passing since IV is now stored on key object
   - Cleaner, more maintainable API

3. **MEDIUM: Remove empty else block for code clarity**
   - Removed empty else block in filer_server_handlers_write_upload.go
   - Improves code readability and eliminates dead code

📊 DETAILED CHANGES:

**weed/s3api/s3api_object_handlers_put.go**:
- Updated applyBucketDefaultEncryption signature: removed sseS3IV parameter
- Updated applySSES3DefaultEncryption signature: removed sseS3IV parameter
- Added key.IV = iv assignment in applySSES3DefaultEncryption
- Updated putToFiler call site: removed sseS3IV variable and parameter

**weed/server/filer_server_handlers_write_upload.go**:
- Removed empty else block (lines 314-315 in original)
- Fixed missing closing brace for if r != nil block
- Improved code structure and readability

🔒 SECURITY IMPACT:

**Before Fix:**
- Bucket default SSE-S3 encryption generated objects that COULD NOT be decrypted
- IV was stored separately and lost during key retrieval process
- Silent data loss - objects appeared encrypted but were unreadable

**After Fix:**
- Bucket default SSE-S3 encryption works correctly end-to-end
- IV properly stored on key object and available during decryption
- Complete functionality restoration for bucket default encryption feature

 VERIFICATION:
- All code compiles successfully
- Bucket encryption tests pass (TestBucketEncryptionAPIOperations, etc.)
- No functional regressions detected
- Code structure improved with better clarity

These fixes ensure bucket default encryption is fully functional and secure,
addressing critical issues that would have prevented successful decryption
of encrypted objects.

* 📝 MEDIUM FIX: Improve error message clarity for SSE-S3 serialization failures

🔍 ISSUE IDENTIFIED:
Copy-paste error in SSE-S3 multipart upload error handling resulted in
identical error messages for two different failure scenarios, making
debugging difficult.

📊 BEFORE (CONFUSING):
- Key generation failure: "failed to generate SSE-S3 key for multipart upload"
- Serialization failure: "failed to serialize SSE-S3 key for multipart upload"
^^ SAME MESSAGE - impossible to distinguish which operation failed

 AFTER (CLEAR):
- Key generation failure: "failed to generate SSE-S3 key for multipart upload"
- Serialization failure: "failed to serialize SSE-S3 metadata for multipart upload"
^^ DISTINCT MESSAGE - immediately clear what failed

🛠️ CHANGE DETAILS:
**weed/s3api/filer_multipart.go (line 133)**:
- Updated criticalError message to be specific about metadata serialization
- Changed from generic "key" to specific "metadata" to indicate the operation
- Maintains consistency with the glog.Errorf message which was already correct

🔍 DEBUGGING BENEFIT:
When multipart upload initialization fails, developers can now immediately
identify whether the failure was in:
1. Key generation (crypto operation failure)
2. Metadata serialization (data encoding failure)

This distinction is critical for proper error handling and debugging in
production environments.

 VERIFICATION:
- Code compiles successfully
- All multipart tests pass (TestMultipartSSEMixedScenarios, TestMultipartSSEPerformance)
- No functional impact - purely improves error message clarity
- Follows best practices for distinct, actionable error messages

This fix improves developer experience and production debugging capabilities.

* 🚨 CRITICAL FIX: Fix IV storage for explicit SSE-S3 uploads - prevents unreadable objects

⚠️ CRITICAL VULNERABILITY FIXED:
The initialization vector (IV) returned by CreateSSES3EncryptedReader was being
discarded for explicit SSE-S3 uploads, making encrypted objects completely
unreadable. This affected all single-part PUT operations with explicit
SSE-S3 headers (X-Amz-Server-Side-Encryption: AES256).

🔍 ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS:

**weed/s3api/s3api_object_handlers_put.go (line 338)**:

**IMPACT**:
- Objects encrypted but IMPOSSIBLE TO DECRYPT
- Silent data loss - encryption appeared successful
- Complete feature non-functionality for explicit SSE-S3 uploads

🔧 COMPREHENSIVE FIX APPLIED:

📊 AFFECTED UPLOAD SCENARIOS:

| Upload Type | Before Fix | After Fix |
|-------------|------------|-----------|
| **Explicit SSE-S3 (single-part)** | Objects unreadable | Full functionality |
| **Bucket default SSE-S3** | Fixed in prev commit | Working |
| **SSE-S3 multipart uploads** | Already working | Working |
| **SSE-C/SSE-KMS uploads** | Unaffected | Working |

🔒 SECURITY & FUNCTIONALITY RESTORATION:

**Before Fix:**
- 💥 **Explicit SSE-S3 uploads = data loss** - objects encrypted but unreadable
- 💥 **Silent failure** - no error during upload, failure during retrieval
- 💥 **Inconsistent behavior** - bucket defaults worked, explicit headers didn't

**After Fix:**
- **Complete SSE-S3 functionality** - all upload types work end-to-end
- **Proper IV management** - stored on key objects for reliable decryption
- **Consistent behavior** - explicit headers and bucket defaults both work

🛠️ TECHNICAL IMPLEMENTATION:

1. **Capture IV from CreateSSES3EncryptedReader**:
   - Changed from discarding (_) to capturing (iv) the return value

2. **Store IV on key object**:
   - Added sseS3Key.IV = iv assignment
   - Ensures IV is included in metadata serialization

3. **Maintains compatibility**:
   - No changes to function signatures or external APIs
   - Consistent with bucket default encryption pattern

 VERIFICATION:
- All code compiles successfully
- All SSE tests pass (48 SSE-related tests)
- Integration tests run successfully
- No functional regressions detected
- Fixes critical data accessibility issue

This completes the SSE-S3 implementation by ensuring IVs are properly stored
for ALL SSE-S3 upload scenarios, making the feature fully production-ready.

* 🧪 ADD CRITICAL REGRESSION TESTS: Prevent IV storage bugs in SSE-S3

⚠️ BACKGROUND - WHY THESE TESTS ARE NEEDED:
The two critical IV storage bugs I fixed earlier were NOT caught by existing
integration tests because the existing tests were too high-level and didn't
verify the specific implementation details where the bugs existed.

🔍 EXISTING TEST ANALYSIS:
- 10 SSE test files with 56 test functions existed
- Tests covered component functionality but missed integration points
- TestSSES3IntegrationBasic and TestSSES3BucketDefaultEncryption existed
- BUT they didn't catch IV storage bugs - they tested overall flow, not internals

🎯 NEW REGRESSION TESTS ADDED:

1. **TestSSES3IVStorageRegression**:
   - Tests explicit SSE-S3 uploads (X-Amz-Server-Side-Encryption: AES256)
   - Verifies IV is properly stored on key object for decryption
   - Would have FAILED with original bug where IV was discarded in putToFiler
   - Tests multiple objects to ensure unique IV storage

2. **TestSSES3BucketDefaultIVStorageRegression**:
   - Tests bucket default SSE-S3 encryption (no explicit headers)
   - Verifies applySSES3DefaultEncryption stores IV on key object
   - Would have FAILED with original bug where IV wasn't stored on key
   - Tests multiple objects with bucket default encryption

3. **TestSSES3EdgeCaseRegression**:
   - Tests empty objects (0 bytes) with SSE-S3
   - Tests large objects (1MB) with SSE-S3
   - Ensures IV storage works across all object sizes

4. **TestSSES3ErrorHandlingRegression**:
   - Tests SSE-S3 with metadata and other S3 operations
   - Verifies integration doesn't break with additional headers

5. **TestSSES3FunctionalityCompletion**:
   - Comprehensive test of all SSE-S3 scenarios
   - Both explicit headers and bucket defaults
   - Ensures complete functionality after bug fixes

🔒 CRITICAL TEST CHARACTERISTICS:

**Explicit Decryption Verification**:

**Targeted Bug Detection**:
- Tests the exact code paths where bugs existed
- Verifies IV storage at metadata/key object level
- Tests both explicit SSE-S3 and bucket default scenarios
- Covers edge cases (empty, large objects)

**Integration Point Testing**:
- putToFiler() → CreateSSES3EncryptedReader() → IV storage
- applySSES3DefaultEncryption() → IV storage on key object
- Bucket configuration → automatic encryption application

📊 TEST RESULTS:
All 4 new regression test suites pass (11 sub-tests total)
 TestSSES3IVStorageRegression: PASS (0.26s)
 TestSSES3BucketDefaultIVStorageRegression: PASS (0.46s)
 TestSSES3EdgeCaseRegression: PASS (0.46s)
 TestSSES3FunctionalityCompletion: PASS (0.25s)

🎯 FUTURE BUG PREVENTION:

**What These Tests Catch**:
- IV storage failures (both explicit and bucket default)
- Metadata serialization issues
- Key object integration problems
- Decryption failures due to missing/corrupted IVs

**Test Strategy Improvement**:
- Added integration-point testing alongside component testing
- End-to-end encrypt→store→retrieve→decrypt verification
- Edge case coverage (empty, large objects)
- Error condition testing

🔄 CI/CD INTEGRATION:
These tests run automatically in the test suite and will catch similar
critical bugs before they reach production. The regression tests complement
existing unit tests by focusing on integration points and data flow.

This ensures the SSE-S3 feature remains fully functional and prevents
regression of the critical IV storage bugs that were fixed.

* Clean up dead code: remove commented-out code blocks and unused TODO comments

* 🔒 CRITICAL SECURITY FIX: Address IV reuse vulnerability in SSE-S3/KMS multipart uploads

**VULNERABILITY ADDRESSED:**
Resolved critical IV reuse vulnerability in SSE-S3 and SSE-KMS multipart uploads
identified in GitHub PR review #3142971052. Using hardcoded offset of 0 for all
multipart upload parts created identical encryption keystreams, compromising
data confidentiality in CTR mode encryption.

**CHANGES MADE:**

1. **Enhanced putToFiler Function Signature:**
   - Added partNumber parameter to calculate unique offsets for each part
   - Prevents IV reuse by ensuring each part gets a unique starting IV

2. **Part Offset Calculation:**
   - Implemented secure offset calculation: (partNumber-1) * 8GB
   - 8GB multiplier ensures no overlap between parts (S3 max part size is 5GB)
   - Applied to both SSE-S3 and SSE-KMS encryption modes

3. **Updated SSE-S3 Implementation:**
   - Modified putToFiler to use partOffset instead of hardcoded 0
   - Enhanced CreateSSES3EncryptedReaderWithBaseIV calls with unique offsets

4. **Added SSE-KMS Security Fix:**
   - Created CreateSSEKMSEncryptedReaderWithBaseIVAndOffset function
   - Updated KMS multipart encryption to use unique IV offsets

5. **Updated All Call Sites:**
   - PutObjectPartHandler: passes actual partID for multipart uploads
   - Single-part uploads: use partNumber=1 for consistency
   - Post-policy uploads: use partNumber=1

**SECURITY IMPACT:**
BEFORE: All multipart parts used same IV (critical vulnerability)
AFTER: Each part uses unique IV calculated from part number (secure)

**VERIFICATION:**
 All regression tests pass (TestSSES3.*Regression)
 Basic SSE-S3 functionality verified
Both explicit SSE-S3 and bucket default scenarios tested
 Build verification successful

**AFFECTED FILES:**
- weed/s3api/s3api_object_handlers_put.go (main fix)
- weed/s3api/s3api_object_handlers_multipart.go (part ID passing)
- weed/s3api/s3api_object_handlers_postpolicy.go (call site update)
- weed/s3api/s3_sse_kms.go (SSE-KMS offset function added)

This fix ensures that the SSE-S3 and SSE-KMS multipart upload implementations
are cryptographically secure and prevent IV reuse attacks in CTR mode encryption.

• Cleaner, more self-documenting code structure

Quality: All copy tests pass successfully
🎯 Impact: Better code maintainability without behavioral changes

Addresses: https://github.com/seaweedfs/seaweedfs/pull/7151#pullrequestreview-3143093588

* 🐛 FIX: Correct SSE-S3 logging condition to avoid misleading logs

 Problem Fixed:
• Logging condition 'sseHeader != "" || result' was too broad
• Logged for ANY SSE request (SSE-C, SSE-KMS, SSE-S3) due to logical equivalence
• Log message said 'SSE-S3 detection' but fired for other SSE types too
• Misleading debugging information for developers

🔧 Solution:
• Changed condition from 'sseHeader != "" || result' to 'if result'
• Now only logs when SSE-S3 is actually detected (result = true)
• Updated comment from 'for any SSE-S3 requests' to 'for SSE-S3 requests'
• Log precision matches the actual SSE-S3 detection logic

🎯 Technical Analysis:
Before: sseHeader != "" || result
• Since result = (sseHeader == SSES3Algorithm)
• If result is true, then sseHeader is not empty
• Condition equivalent to sseHeader != "" (logs all SSE types)

After: if result
• Only logs when sseHeader == SSES3Algorithm
• Precise logging that matches the function's purpose
• No more false positives from other SSE types

Quality: SSE-S3 integration tests pass successfully
🎯 Impact: More accurate debugging logs, less log noise

* 🐛 FIX: Enable comprehensive KMS key ID validation in ParseSSEKMSHeaders

 Problem Identified:
• Test TestSSEKMSInvalidConfigurations/Invalid_key_ID_format was failing
• ParseSSEKMSHeaders only called ValidateSSEKMSKey (basic nil check)
• Did not call ValidateSSEKMSKeyInternal which includes isValidKMSKeyID format validation
• Invalid key IDs like "invalid key id with spaces" were accepted when they should be rejected

🔧 Solution Implemented:
• Changed ParseSSEKMSHeaders to call ValidateSSEKMSKeyInternal instead of ValidateSSEKMSKey
• ValidateSSEKMSKeyInternal includes comprehensive validation:
  - Basic nil checks (via ValidateSSEKMSKey)
  - Key ID format validation (via isValidKMSKeyID)
  - Proper rejection of key IDs with spaces, invalid formats

📝 Technical Details:
Before:
• ValidateSSEKMSKey: Only checks if sseKey is nil
• Missing key ID format validation in header parsing

After:
• ValidateSSEKMSKeyInternal: Full validation chain
  - Calls ValidateSSEKMSKey for nil checks
  - Validates key ID format using isValidKMSKeyID
  - Rejects keys with spaces, invalid formats

🎯 Test Results:
TestSSEKMSInvalidConfigurations/Invalid_key_ID_format: Now properly fails invalid formats
All existing SSE tests continue to pass (30+ test cases)
Comprehensive validation without breaking existing functionality

🔍 Impact:
• Better security: Invalid key IDs properly rejected at parse time
• Consistent validation: Same validation logic across all KMS operations
• Test coverage: Previously untested validation path now working correctly

🔧 Solution Implemented:

**1. Updated Protobuf Schema**
• Renamed field from sse_kms_metadata → sse_metadata
• Updated comment to clarify: 'Serialized SSE metadata for this chunk (SSE-C, SSE-KMS, or SSE-S3)'
• Regenerated protobuf Go code with correct field naming

**2. Updated All Code References**
• Updated 29 references across all Go files
• Changed SseKmsMetadata → SseMetadata (struct field)
• Changed GetSseKmsMetadata() → GetSseMetadata() (getter method)
• Updated function parameters: sseKmsMetadata → sseMetadata
• Fixed parameter references in function bodies

**3. Preserved Unified Metadata Pattern**
• Maintained existing behavior: one field stores all SSE metadata types
• SseType field still determines how to deserialize the metadata

* Update registry.go

* Fix GitHub PR #7144 latest review comments

Address all new code review comments from Gemini Code Assist bot:

1. **High Priority - SSE-KMS Detection Logic**: Tightened IsSSEKMSEncrypted function
   - Now relies only on the canonical x-amz-server-side-encryption header
   - Removed redundant check for x-amz-encrypted-data-key metadata
   - Prevents misinterpretation of objects with inconsistent metadata state
   - Updated test case to reflect correct behavior (encrypted data key only = false)

2. **Medium Priority - UUID Validation**: Enhanced KMS key ID validation
   - Replaced simplistic length/hyphen count check with proper regex validation
   - Added regexp import for robust UUID format checking
   - Regex pattern: ^[a-fA-F0-9]{8}-[a-fA-F0-9]{4}-[a-fA-F0-9]{4}-[a-fA-F0-9]{4}-[a-fA-F0-9]{12}$
   - Prevents invalid formats like '------------------------------------' from passing

3. **Medium Priority - Alias Mutation Fix**: Avoided input slice modification
   - Changed CreateKey to not mutate the input aliases slice in-place
   - Uses local variable for modified alias to prevent side effects
   - Maintains backward compatibility while being safer for callers

All changes improve code robustness and follow AWS S3 standards more closely.
Tests updated and passing for all scenarios including edge cases.

* Fix failing SSE tests

Address two failing test cases:

1. **TestSSEHeaderConflicts**: Fixed SSE-C and SSE-KMS mutual exclusion
   - Modified IsSSECRequest to return false if SSE-KMS headers are present
   - Modified IsSSEKMSRequest to return false if SSE-C headers are present
   - This prevents both detection functions from returning true simultaneously
   - Aligns with AWS S3 behavior where SSE-C and SSE-KMS are mutually exclusive

2. **TestBucketEncryptionEdgeCases**: Fixed XML namespace validation
   - Added namespace validation in encryptionConfigFromXMLBytes function
   - Now rejects XML with invalid namespaces (only allows empty or AWS standard namespace)
   - Validates XMLName.Space to ensure proper XML structure
   - Prevents acceptance of malformed XML with incorrect namespaces

Both fixes improve compliance with AWS S3 standards and prevent invalid
configurations from being accepted. All SSE and bucket encryption tests
now pass successfully.

* Fix GitHub PR #7144 latest review comments

Address two new code review comments from Gemini Code Assist bot:

1. **High Priority - Race Condition in UpdateBucketMetadata**: Fixed thread safety issue
   - Added per-bucket locking mechanism to prevent race conditions
   - Introduced bucketMetadataLocks map with RWMutex for each bucket
   - Added getBucketMetadataLock helper with double-checked locking pattern
   - UpdateBucketMetadata now uses bucket-specific locks to serialize metadata updates
   - Prevents last-writer-wins scenarios when concurrent requests update different metadata parts

2. **Medium Priority - KMS Key ARN Validation**: Improved robustness of ARN validation
   - Enhanced isValidKMSKeyID function to strictly validate ARN structure
   - Changed from 'len(parts) >= 6' to 'len(parts) != 6' for exact part count
